A press release about a research committee of the National
Academy of Science in June 2000 is being touted on the
internet --for what looks on face value to be alarming
conclusions. Summarizing the report by the Committee on
Developmental Toxicology, it states: "Approximately

prenatal or postnatal death or an otherwise less than
healthy baby."
Headlines proclaim: "shocking pregnancy statistics."
That's downright misleading.

quantities of corn, protein supplements -- and drugs,

of new antibiotic-resistant ''superbugs.''

Side-effects present serious hurdle

The FDA and Nevirapine manufacturers Boehringer
Ingelheim are reviewing a Ugandan clinical trial after
questions over whether Nevirapine can be mass-marketed
for preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV in
the United States.
But another African trial involving "irregularities" also
has serious implications for Nevirapine. In fact, tragic
side-effects on patients using Nevirapine as their first
anti-HIV drug, led to five deaths which halted a drug
trial in 2000, at the Kalafong Hospital in Pretoria, South
Africa.
